Really? I'd probably consider all the fishing I did one of the essential experiences of my youth, and certainly the primary bond I had with my maternal grandfather.

You perhaps have only been exposed to one particular type of fishing person, or at least a very limited range of them; we're not all rednecks, you know. There are lots of types of fishing, and lots of types of fishing people; it's also in my experience more often something an otherwise diverse group of people have in common rather than being a specific type of person. I can and have had lengthy and in-depth discussions about fishing with people I otherwise have absolutely nothing in common with. Granted, with all that said, I have to admit that fishing comes from the Southern half of my family. ;)
